April Sex Abuse Awareness Month

Well each April we acknowledge sexual abuse a bit more. I believe every month should be sexual abuse awareness month. This month I was able to speak on speaker phone to a class at Ithaca College in Upstate New York about "Invisible Girls". The teacher has used my book for three semesters with her health ed undergrad teachers in training. It was great to speak to the students directly. Also I will be taking the train to Washington DC tomorrow to participate in "Stop The Silence" march. I will be personally giving away books through my Girlthrive Education Fund. So if any of you are in Washington on Sunday April 13, stop by the march! And remember every day you tell someone sex abuse exists you are breaking open Pandora's box of secrets!
What have you done on a personal level that has broken open Pandora's box?? Please share. xo love, dr. p

I had a friend who I believed had been sexually abused. But she wouldn't tell me and she said that she had a secret but she couldn't tell anyone because it was something really big. I decided to speak up about the person who had sexually abused me. I wrote a story about a girl and I asked my friend what she thought. In the end I told her that the girl in the story was me. Since then we have been great friends and speaking up and helping other survivors. With the support of each other we go very far and let the people know that we aren't there to be used as toys...

Wow Mandy, It is great that by example you are inspiring other girls to own their abuse and move forward in their healing. It is great to have a friend who understands and is there to support you. You are that friend on this blog and in your life. Thanks so much for your inspirational sharing! xo dr. patti

After reading the book Invisible Girls, I knew what I had to do. I have to open Pandora's box. It may not be easy and in opening it, lots of bad things came out. But also, lots of good came from it to. Speaking of the past has set me free. I've found by telling my friends, that they trust me enough to tell me of their pasts and through that I am able to support them and encourage them to get the help that they deserve just as I did.

Hi Patti!
I came across your site and I'm so glad I did. I myself am not a victim of sexual abuse. But I feel a lot of pain for those who have experienced it, and a lot of anger toards those who do it.
I'm really concerned about the men who do these things. It seems like men are conditioned to be sexual without respect or love. How can we prevent sexual abuse? How can we help more men develop into kind and loving people and not users and abusers?
Is there any way to get through to people who seem to think abusing people is no big deal?
Someday when I have kids I'm going to have your book and we're all going to read it. I think every family should have a copy. Even if no one in the family is being abused, it would give people the strength to spot signs and help others. Thank you for the work you're trying to do in this crazy world.

Please read "There is No Sex Fairy To Protect Our Children from Becoming Sexual Abusers" by Jan Hindman. It should be a must-read for anyone who has children!

I spoke about my experiences every semester in college at Take Back the Night/Voices Raised in Power. I recently went back to my campus to visit and I still feel so empowered being there because of the courage I had to put myself out there and help others heal.
